Acid Wash Services
At Bass Pool Pros, we take a careful, step-by-step approach to every acid wash to ensure the best possible results while protecting your pool surface and equipment.
Step 1: Evaluate & Plan
We start by assessing your pool’s condition and identifying the type of staining or buildup present. From there, we walk you through the process, set clear expectations, and make sure an acid wash is the right solution before moving forward.Step 2: Drain & Prepare
The pool is safely drained and prepped for treatment. We take care to protect surrounding areas and ensure everything is ready for a controlled and effective acid wash.Step 3: Acid Wash Treatment
We apply a professional-grade acid wash to remove deep stains, discoloration, and mineral buildup. This process strips away a thin layer of the surface to restore the original look of your pool.Step 4: Refill & Start-Up
Once the pool is clean, we begin the refill process. Proper start-up is key to protecting your surface and ensuring long-term results.
Done the right way, from start to finish—no shortcuts, no guesswork.
Our Acid Wash Process
We recommend acid washes for many different reasons, but we always recommend an acid wash every time your pool is drained as long as its not green. If we were to simply drain and refill without performing an acid wash your water can revert to the same high calcium and cyanuric acid levels within 3-6 months. This also allows any metals that could potentially be oxidized and cause staining to be rinsed off the surface.
You may need an acid wash if you’re dealing with:
Stubborn Stains
Stains from algae, metals, or organic buildup that won’t come off with brushing or chemical treatments.Calcium Buildup & Scaling
Rough, white deposits on the surface caused by high calcium levels—common here in Arizona.Discoloration or Uneven Appearance
Pools that look dull, blotchy, or have lost their original finish over time.Severely Neglected Pools
Pools that have been left untreated for extended periods and have heavy staining or buildup.
Not every pool needs an acid wash—and we’ll never recommend one unless it’s truly the right solution. In many cases, there are less aggressive and more cost-effective options to improve your pool’s appearance. Our goal is to evaluate your pool honestly and guide you toward the best option for your situation.
If it can be fixed without an acid wash, we’ll tell you. If it can’t—we’ll do it the right way.
When is an acid wash Needed
We believe in being upfront and honest—no surprises. Before starting, we’ll explain exactly what to expect, what results are realistic, and whether an acid wash is the best option for your pool. An acid wash can make a big difference in the look of your pool, but it’s important to understand the process and set the right expectations from the start.
Removes a Thin Layer of Surface
An acid wash works by removing a small layer of the surface to take stains and buildup with it. This is what restores the appearance—but it’s also why it’s not something done frequently. Results Depend on Pool Condition
Most stains will lighten significantly, but some deeper or older stains may not disappear completely. We’ll walk you through what’s realistic before we begin.Multi-Day Process
From draining to refill and startup, the process typically takes 2-4 days. We take the time to do it right and ensure your pool is properly set up afterward.Proper Start-Up Is Key
Once the pool is refilled, we carefully balance the water to protect the surface and prevent issues like scaling or damage moving forward. Not a Routine Service
Acid washes are only recommended when truly needed.
Clear expectations. Professional process. Results you can trust.
What to Expect
Not every pool needs an acid wash. In many cases, there are less aggressive—and more cost-effective—ways to improve your pool’s appearance. At Bass Pool Pros, we always look at these options first before recommending an acid wash.
Targeted Chemical Treatments
For lighter staining or discoloration, specific chemical treatments can often break down stains and restore clarity without removing any of the pool surface.Green to Clean Service
If the issue is algae-related, a full green to clean treatment can eliminate the problem and bring your pool back to clear without the need for an acid wash.Deep Cleaning & Brushing
In some cases, buildup can be reduced with thorough brushing, filtration, and proper water balance over time.Filter Cleaning & Circulation Improvements
Poor water movement and dirty filters can contribute to staining and water issues. Addressing these can make a noticeable difference in overall appearance.Specialty Stain Treatments
Certain stains (like metal or organic stains) can be treated with more targeted solutions designed to lift or lighten them without removing plaster.
We don’t jump straight to the most aggressive option. If there’s a simpler way to improve your pool, we’ll recommend it first. If an acid wash is truly needed, we’ll walk you through exactly why and make sure it’s done the right way.
alternatives to acid washing
When done at the right time and for the right reasons, an acid wash can completely transform the look of your pool and help extend its life.
Restores Your Pool’s Appearance
Removes deep stains, discoloration, and buildup to bring your pool surface back to a cleaner, brighter look.Eliminates Stubborn Stains
Targets stains from algae, metals, and minerals that regular cleaning and treatments can’t remove.Removes Calcium & Scale Buildup
Breaks down rough calcium deposits and scaling, leaving your pool surface smoother and more even.Improves Overall Water Quality
By removing buildup and contaminants on the surface, your pool can hold balance more easily moving forward.Helps Extend Time Before Resurfacing
While not a replacement for resurfacing, an acid wash can improve the condition and appearance of your pool and help you get more life out of your current surface.
We only recommend acid washes when they truly make sense. If there’s a better or less aggressive option, we’ll guide you in that direction first.
Benefits of an acid wash
How much does an acid wash cost?
Pricing depends on your pool’s size, condition, and the level of staining or buildup. We provide a free, honest quote after seeing your pool and will walk you through exactly what’s needed—no surprises, no unnecessary upsells.
How long does an acid wash take?
Most acid wash projects take 2–4 days from draining to refill and start-up. Larger or more involved jobs can take a bit longer, but we’ll give you a clear timeline upfront.
Will an acid wash damage my pool?
When done correctly, an acid wash is safe—but it does remove a thin layer of the surface. That’s why it’s only recommended when needed and performed carefully to protect your surface.
Will it remove all stains?
Most stains will lighten significantly, and many will be removed completely. However, deeper or older stains may not fully disappear. We’ll set clear expectations before starting so you know what to expect.
How often should an acid wash be done?
Acid washes are not routine maintenance. They should only be done when necessary, as doing them too often can wear down your pool surface over time.
Do I need to be home during the process?
No—you don’t need to be home as long as we have access to your pool and equipment. We’ll keep you updated throughout the process.
Is there anything I should do before or after an acid wash?
Before we begin, we’ll go over any prep needed. Afterward, proper water balance is key—our start-up process ensures your pool is set up correctly to protect the surface and maintain results.
Are there alternatives to an acid wash?
Yes—in some cases, stains can be improved with chemical treatments or other less aggressive methods. We always explore those options first and only recommend an acid wash when it’s truly the best solution.
